Mahajan urges CEC not to allot work to Chawla

Sushanta Talukdar

Appeals to Prime Minister Manmohan

GUWAHATI: Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Pramod Mahajan on Thursday urged Chief Election Commissioner B.B. Tandon not to allot any work to Election Commissioner Navin B. Chawla.

Mr. Mahajan also demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh request President Abdul Kalam to withdraw his pleasure in the appointment of Mr. Chawla.

"I would appeal to the conscience of Navin Chawla and he should resign on his own. If he does not resign, then the CEC should not allot any work to him," he said.

The BJP has been demanding Mr. Chawla's resignation following reports that the private trusts run by Mr. Chawla's family received donations from Congress MPs.

Mr. Chawla, however, said on Monday that the donations by MPs from their Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme had come well before he was appointed Election Commissioner and that this had not affected his independent work as Election Commissioner in any way.
