Zaragoza routs Madrid

MADRID: Diego Milito scored four goals as Real Zaragoza overwhelmed Real Madrid 6-1 in a Copa del Rey first-leg semifinal on Wednesday.

Brazilian Ewerthon scored a brace at La Romareda Stadium, leaving Madrid looking almost certain to be eliminated in next week's second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. Julio Baptista netted a consolation goal for the visitors.

Zaragoza stunned Madrid by racing to a three-goal lead in the first 34 minutes. Milito opened his account in the 15th minute by rifling a rising shot from a pass by fellow striker Ewerthon, who had beaten Madrid defender Ivan Helguera to the ball and raced clear down the right wing. In the 22nd, the Argentine took advantage of a quick throw-in which caught Madrid's defence unawares, and evaded Sergio Ramos' attempted tackle before flicking the ball past Iker Casillas. Milito completed his hat trick 12 minutes later when he sent a downward header home.

Baptista pulled a goal back in the 37th, heading over goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez from David Beckham's floated free kick. However, Milito restored Zaragoza's three-goal advantage in the 56th with a header from Cani's corner, while Ewerthon scored the fifth goal five minutes later and added further misery on Madrid by scoring with a fierce volley from outside the penalty box.

The results: Copa del Rey: Real Zaragoza bt Real Madrid 6-1.
