New thermal plant to be set up at Goindwal Sahib

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with GVK Power (Goindwal Sahib) Ltd. at Patiala in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh for setting up of a 500 MW thermal plant at Goindwal Sahib with an investment of Rs 2500 crore.

G V Krishnareddy, Chairman GVK Industries Ltd, Hyderabad and Y S Ratra, Chairman PSEB, signed the MOU, an official release said here.

Mr. Singh said the State Government embarked upon an ambitious programme to spend 26 per cent of the annual budget of 2005-06 for the power sector after a gap of 23 years. Earlier, the Darbara Singh led Congress Government in 1982 spent 52 per cent of its budget for the power generation.

The Chief Minister said the State Government was all set to generate 1250 MW of power by setting up of 500 MW thermal plant at Goindwal, 500 MW at Lehra Mohabbat, 166 MW at Shahpur Kandi and 84 MW at Mukerian to augment the power deficit of 2300 MW in the State. Besides, Gas Authority of India (GAIL) would set up a gas based power project of 1000 MW at Doraha and the State Government had suggested to the Centre to switch over this plant to coal based till the installation of the gas pipeline in order to augment power supply. The Government of India had already agreed in principle to set up a 4000 MW NTPC super thermal plant at Chhattisgarh in which Punjab would get its share of 1500 MW and this project was in the advanced stage of implementation.
