NEW DELHI: A new technology that can detect gastrointestinal cancers at an early stage with an accuracy of 95 per cent will soon be available here in the Capital. Called ``Narrow Band Imaging'', the technology is a kind of endoscopy to see the inner regions of the digestive organs that get affected in this type of cancer, said Senior Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr. Randhir Sud. Explaining how the system works, Dr. Sud said: "The technology uses white light in the narrow bandwidth of blue and green regions. Normally, white light is used in endoscopy to see internal tissues. As this light is scattered by the internal tissues, less details are visible. Use of narrow band-width minimises the scattering of light, thus making viewing of minute details of tissues possible.'' He said abnormal tissue could be distinguished from the normal tissue. Early cancers can be detected with 95 per cent accuracy in comparison to 50 per cent accuracy in the technology using white light.
