Actress Nadira passes away

Mumbai: Veteran actress Nadira who had portrayed various negative roles with panache in films of the 1950s and 60s, including `Aan' with Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor's `Shree 420', died after prolonged illness at a city hospital this morning. She was 74.

Nadira was admitted to the ICU of Bhatia Hospital in central Mumbai on December 31 after she suffered a paralytic stroke coupled with a heart attack and passed away at 4.55 a.m.

She was also suffering from other complications and had been in coma, doctors said.

Starting her career in 1952 with `Aan', Nadira acted in several popular films, including `Shree 420', `Pakeezah' and `Julie,' painting various shades of grey — be it a confident woman or a sensuous seductress.

Nadira acted in over 60 films starting off with the Mehboob Khan-directed `Aan,' where she played the fiery Princess Rajashree, and featured in classics such as `Waris,' `Shree 420,' Kamal Amrohi's `Pakeezah,' `Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi,' `Saagar' and `Amar Akbar Anthony.'

Her evocative performance as a woman trying to woo Raj Kapoor in the immortal song `Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh' in `Shree 420' has remained etched in the minds of cine lovers.

Nadira, born in Israel as Florence Ezekiel, won the Filmfare award in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in the film `Julie' (1975).

A spinster, Nadira had been staying all alone in a flat in south Mumbai for several years. She is survived by two brothers - one in the US and one in Israel. — PTI
