Udhagamandalam: Distribution of subsidy to farmers under the extended Tea Growers Protection Scheme of the State Government would commence next week, said the Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar while presiding over a grievances redressal mass contact programme at Hullathy near here on Wednesday. The beneficiaries would get Rs.1,400 each. Stating that being a hilly district, the Nilgiris received more funds than any other districts for development of panchayats, he said that a substantial amount was also earmarked under the Hill Area Development Programme (HADP). The basic amenities were being improved and projects such as construction of community halls taken up in the villages. Exhorting the villagers to accord high priority to sanitation, he said that all the houses should have toilet facilities. Since there was a ban on assigning government land for implementing the `house site patta scheme' in the Nilgiris, the Government has set aside Rs. one crore for purchasing private land. The District Revenue Officer, S. Azhagarsamy, also spoke. The president, Hullathy Panchayat Ravichandran, welcomed the gathering.
