Vijayawada
Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA: A posse of traffic policemen descended on the NTR circle junction in Patamata on Thursday morning and carried out a study on how to regulate the movement of vehicles to ensure free flow of traffic. Similarly, staff from Ideal Survey Consultants, an agency appointed by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to conduct surveys at select traffic junctions, began an exercise at the junction to take measurements of the roads, road dividers and edges of the shops near the circle. As a sequel to a report that appeared in The Hindu highlighting the plight of road users at the junction under `At the Crossroads' column on Thursday, Police Commissioner Umesh Sharraf deputed Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic wing) T. Prabhakara Babu to conduct a study on traffic chaos at the junction. The police team warned deliberate violators of road rules against breaking the law and told them that they were liable for punishment. The ACP, along with Reserve Inspector (traffic) A. Joshi, sub-inspectors and constables reached the junction around 10 a.m. and studied the vehicular movement for an hour. He observed the sudden stoppage of RTC buses near the circle, plight of pedestrians to cross the circle, unavoidable violation of road rules by people travelling from Panta Kaluva road to Krishnaveni School Road and vice-versa.
Alternatives discussed
He asked Mr. Joshi at what time traffic constable would reach the junction for duty at the junction and from when the signal lights had stopped functioning. He discussed alternatives to ensure hassle-free flow of vehicles from the junction. "I will submit a report to the Commissioner of Police on measures to be taken at traffic junction," Mr. Prabhakara Babu said. Meanwhile, a team of surveyors from Ideal Survey Consultants launched a survey. They took measurements like width of roads connecting to the circle, size of circle around the NTR statue and edges of several shops located adjacent to the junction. "Once the survey is completed, we will submit a detailed report and plans to the city planning wing of the VMC. It will take a week for us to complete the drawings," said K.V. Rao, director of the agency.
