Bangalore: It was an effort to keep alive a genre of classical music that was once in danger of fading away. Like many good aspects of Indian culture, a wave of revival saved the Haridasa style of devotional singing. The Karnataka Haridasa Scientific Research Centre organised a State-level competition in singing Haridasa compositions at Vijayanagar here this week. Forty young artists, who have passed the junior and senior music examinations, participated in it. In the senior level, Sumana Chandrasekhar won the first prize and Chandrika B. second prize. In the junior level, R. Anupama stood first and K. Prafulla and R. Ramya shared the second prize. The third prize went to S. Vishaka Bharadwaj and U. Pratima. Merit certificates were given to D.S. Shwetha, T.S. Chiranjeevi, M. Pooja Tayoor, K.S. Rashmi, Madhumita Hebbar, A. Shruthi, Anasooya Sharma, B.M. Manasa and N. Suhas. "The contest and singing were of a very high order and the Research Centre deserves all praise for conducting such a quality programme,'' B. Archit, singer, said. R. Bharadwaj, economist and theatre exponent, who inaugurated the event, highlighted the contributions of Haridasa to Indian music and added that singing of compositions of these "folk philosophers" needs encouragement. The young singers showed such traditions could be kept alive for generations to come, he said.
