Baalu to lay foundation for road works

Coimbatore: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu will lay the foundation for the widening, strengthening and upgradation of the Karur - Coimbatore section of National Highways No. 67 on February 10 on Park Gate exhibition grounds.

A release by the Press Information Bureau, Madurai, said that Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan and the Coimbatore MP K. Subbarayan would take part.

The section of NH 67 would be taken up for strengthening the existing carriage way and its widening with 1.5-m paved shoulders on either side. Under the first phase, the 59.2-km stretch from Karur to Kangeyam would be strengthened and widened. The 55.2-km stretch from Kangeyam to Coimbatore would be taken up in the second phase. The work included reconstruction of seven minor bridges, 67 culverts and construction of 32 new pipe culverts at Rs. 176.62 crores, and would be completed in 24 months.
