VISAKHAPATNAM: Unprecedented security bandobust has been made in view of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's three-day visit to the city from February 11 to 13. Nearly 4,000 police personnel have been mobilised from across the State in addition to local police force. Those who have been brought to the city included 25 officers above the rank of DSP, 2,500 head constables and constables and 800 armed reserve police. ``We are taking no chance. We have also imposed traffic restrictions and hope that public will extend their wholehearted cooperation to make the Presidential Fleet Review (PFR) a grand success,'' Commissioner of Police V.S.K. Kaumudi told reporters on Thursday.
Special counters
He said they had set up `May I Help You' counters at Jalaripeta, Coastal Battery, Gokul park, Sagara Tarangalu, Kalimata temple, Rajiv Gandhi park, Victory-at-sea, Park hotel junction, Kailasagiri foothills and Tenneti park. Mr. Kaumudi advised people to watch the operational display of the Navy during the PFR on Sunday from Park Hotel area to avoid congestion at RK beach. He said INS Viraat -- the only aircraft career of the Navy -- would go up to Tenneti park and return to RK beach.
Passes for vehicles
Disclosing that vehicle passes were being issued for people staying near the beach (not valid on February 12), he said they had appealed to residents not to entertain strangers and allow outsiders to park their vehicles in their buildings on `security grounds.'
Special buses
People who want to have a clear view of PFR have to go towards Park Hotel by using RTC buses. Buses will ply from Jagadamba to Park hotel via Siripuram and CR Square from 1 p.m. on February 12. Crossing of Siripuram junction is allowed up to 2 p.m. Thereafter, buses will run from Jagadamba to Collectorate--Coastal battery--fishing harbour and post office on a circular route till 9 p.m. Buses will ply from Pedawaltair junction via Old III town police station and Park hotel up to Pedawaltair bus depot junction. The buses will stop near Park Hotel and take a left turn. In the restricted area close to Coastal Battery, Pandimetta junction, CR square and Park hotel, only vehicles with authorised car passes will be allowed from noon to 9 p.m. Parking areas have been earmarked for public in the following areas: Limited parking at AU site near Submarine and A.T. Rayudu site near Park hotel, regular parking towards Park hotel/VUDA park.
Media centre set up
A media centre has been established at Naval Coast Battery for use by media personnel covering the event. The media centre has broadband Internet and fax facility. The centre with phone no.2768707 provides information on the PFR and related activities.
