Killed in road accident

TIRUCHI : A 51-year-old man was killed in a road accident on the Thiruverambur-Kallanai road on Thursday.

The police said Periyasamy of Thogur and one Elangovan were proceeding on a moped. When Periyasamy got down from the vehicle, a van hit him from behind killing him on the spot.

Van driver Saminathan was arrested. The Thiruverambur police are investigating.

Rituals at temple

`Nava chandi homam' and `Eka Dina Laksharchanai' were performed to Goddess Sri Durga at the Sri Durgai Amman Temple at Palakkarai in the city recently.

A release from the temple here said the rituals were performed for universal prosperity.

Move to create political awareness

The Nambikkai Nanbargal Iyakkam has decided to create political awareness among the people, at a meeting held to mark its fourth anniversary celebrations.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, Iyakkam coordinator N. Ramakrishnan said the members of the Iyakkam would prevail upon the people to elect efficient politicians in the forthcoming Assembly elections and ensure cent per cent polling.

Relief material distributed

The chairperson of the State Social Welfare Board, C. R. Saraswathi, on Wednesday distributed relief material to the flood-affected people of Shanmuga Nagar in the city at a function organised by the Centre for Awareness and Rural Education (CARE).

Ms. Saraswathi commended the effective steps taken by the State Government to bring solace to the flood-hit people of various districts.

The Director of the CARE, D. Ramu, representatives of the Shanmuga Nagar Residents Welfare association and others were present.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 112.57 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 810 cusecs and the outflow 1000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.
