A sad commentary on a social menace

Achanurangathu Veedu

The film is based on a true incident, which shook the State nearly a couple of years ago, of a schoolgirl being sexually exploited by more than 30 people. Courts have given different judgments in the case, which is now with the Supreme Court.

The film is a sad commentary on archaic laws, which are impotent and ineffective, and humiliating and demeaning ways of cross-examining even young girls in courts.

In the film, the father of the unfortunate girl attempts suicide unable to bear the dishonour and is send to prison for it. On the other hand, those guilty of sexual aggression against the hapless girl go scot-free, with the help of ill-gotten money and influence.

The film is a striking reminder to parents who pressure children to score higher marks every time. Many children run away from home unable to bear this harassment. The film shows how even in highly literate Kerala, young girls have nowhere to go and fall prey to pimps and sex workers once their parents are no more with them.

Salimkumar, a comic actor, has given a heart-rending performance in a once-in-a-lifetime role of a clueless father of three grown-up girls. His role will linger in our minds and hearts for a long time. Harisree Asokan, as a corrupt and incompetent son-in-law, comes up with a fabulous comic performance. Sujakarthika, Samvartha and Muktha look the part as children stricken by poverty and ill-fate.

Indrajith, as an energetic but gutless police officer, and Prithviraj, as a fearless but helpless hero before police brutalities, do justice to their roles. Murali's role as a good-soul co-worker of Salimkumar is praiseworthy.

Songs written by Vayalar Sharathchandra Varma have been composed brilliantly by Alex Paul.

A thought-provoking film by Lal Jose, which must be seen by all parents, lawmakers and, of course, police officers for some soul-searching.
