KOCHI: The Cochin Film Society is offering its tribute to one of the gifted artistes of our times Kalamandalam Hyderali. A documentary on this Kathakali singer will be screened on Saturday, as part of the society's monthly programme. Just like the career of the late Hyderali, who met with an untimely death in a motor accident, the film is also not complete. The filmmaker Mani Lal had been planning the film for a long time. "I wanted to visualise the life and career of this artiste. However, owing to many reasons, we could only work on some interview sessions and shot him singing without accompanying musicians," Mr. Lal said. This 22-minute film was made out of the rushes shot so far and was telecast on the death of Hyderali. This is the first time that the film is being screened in public. Befittingly, the film is being screened at the ongoing First DC International Book Festival. The society will also screen the Iraq-Iranian film Turtles Can Fly by Bahman Ghobadi. It is a tale of Kurdish refugee community just before and after the American invasion of Iraq. The film won the audience award at the International Film Festival at Rotterdam in 2005. On February 21, the society will screen another unique film this time from inside the Kochi royal family. Ekamevadwitheeyam, shot entirely with crew and cast from the family, is about a significant phase in the spiritual history of the family. This will be followed by a German adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover.
