KOCHI: History of man's progress is an endless saga of acts of courage and compassion and deeds of masterminds, like Socrates, Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa, that motivate us towards noble thoughts and deeds, said Governor R.L. Bhatia here on Friday. He was speaking after presenting Chavara Lifetime Achievement Award to K. Narayana Kurup, former Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. The Governor said Mr. Kurup had often been hailed as the harbinger of judicial activism in India, particularly after his landmark judgment banning smoking in public places. This path-breaking judgment was referred universally as a unique contribution by the Indian judiciary to protect the basic human right to health, he added. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Kurup said that whatever he achieved in his judicial career was a sequel to his commitment to society. K.V. Thomas, MLA, in his keynote address, said that by honouring Mr. Kurup, a system was being honoured. Mayor Mercy Williams presided over the function. Mathew Kaniamparambil, Vicar-General, CMI Congregation, Jose Chittilappilly, chairman, Roby Kannanchira, director, and T.S. Joy, secretary, Chavara Cultural Centre, spoke.
