dated February 11, 1956: `Goa, integral part of India'

Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru told the Subjects Committee of the Congress in Shaheednagar (Amritsar) on February 10, "Portuguese domination over Goa is like a thorn in our heart - constantly pricking us. Far from our being able to forget it, it is constantly agonising us. But we have to view the problem in a broad perspective and try to solve it with patience." Intervening in the debate on the official resolution on international affairs, he said Goa was a small place. Even militarily the Portuguese could stand nowhere in comparison with India on this issue. But such problems had to be viewed in the larger context. "Such small problems become part of the larger problems. They cannot be solved in isolation from bigger problems. The Portuguese have their domination not only in Goa but also in Macao in China. The domination of Portuguese in Macao is still continuing. Why? China, if it wants, can any day take it, but why she does not take it? It is because if she does so, then it will create more difficulties in her other tasks. No doubt, Macao will revert to China. Similarly Goa will also be ours."
