MANGALORE: The Vice-Chancellor of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, R.N. Srinivas Gowda, will inaugurate the Indian chapter of the T.V.R. Pillay Aquaculture Foundation on the campus of the College of Fisheries here on Monday. The foundation is based in Bangkok, according to the president of the Indian chapter, H.P.C. Shetty.

Prof. Shetty told presspersons here on Friday that the foundation has been established to commemorate the contribution of the late Pillay, former coordinator of the Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme in the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO). Pillay was committed to poverty alleviation and food security through his work, he noted.

The mission of the foundation is to advocate and support policy decisions on environmentally sound, sustainable aquaculture development in India. It will also encourage and foster research and development in aquaculture to narrow the gap between supply and demand for aquatic food products.

In order to meet its objective of promoting aquaculture research, extension and development, the foundation will recognise outstanding work by governmental or private institutions in aquaculture by instituting awards.

    Research grants

The foundation will commission specific aquaculture research projects of applied economic value through research grants to individuals and institutions. It will promote human resource development in aquaculture through granting of postgraduate research fellowships.

The foundation will be registered within the next few months, he said, and it will operate on donations from individuals, private agencies, national, international and governmental agencies. E.G. Silas, former Vice-Chancellor, Kerala Agricultural University, will deliver the Foundation Day Lecture, he said.
