Campaign against parishad condemned

MANGALORE: All India Konkani Parishad general secretary Gokuldas Prabhu has condemned the efforts being made to malign the name of the parishad by some persons identified with the Vishwa Konkani Parishad.

In a rejoinder to the statement of Vishwa Konkani Parishad president Eric Ozario, which appeared in these columns, Mr. Prabhu said that the statement of Mr. Ozario is nothing but "wild imagination" and "false allegations."

Mr. Prabhu, who is presently in Panaji attending the All India Konkani Parishad session, clarified that the All India Konkani Parishad was the earliest such organisation formed with the objective of protecting and nurturing Konkani people and their culture and language, and even today it is the apex body of Konkani unity.

Affiliated organisations

There are 13 Konkani organisations affiliated to the parishad from Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra and it is the single largest organisation representing the Konkani people.

Mr. Prabhu said all 54 members on the general council of the parishad are elected democratically, and all the 13 associations in Konkani-speaking areas participate in the election process. The parishad is registered under the Societies Registration Act.

Mr. Prabhu said despite the best efforts of Mr. Ozario, who gave a call to boycott the session of the parishad in Panaji, which started on February 10, nearly 280 delegates participated in the first day and the number will go up in the next two days. This goes to show that Mr. Ozario's designs have been defeated, he said.
