Kozhikode: The Malabar Chamber of Commerce has said that the budget for 2006-2007 presented by Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman on Friday has neglected North Kerala. Chamber secretary P.G. Anoop Narayanan said in a statement here that the Budget contained only promises and that most of the proposals were focussed on developing southern districts. He said that the Budget had not given emphasis on the needs of North Kerala especially improving infrastructure, development of Beypore port, expressway, coastal road and tourism. Besides, the tax proposals would not encourage the tourism industry. Mr. Anoop said that the proposals were drawn up with an eye on the coming Assembly elections. The proposal to introduce compounding system for star hotels, gold, medicines and hotel industry would create more problems, he said. The Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry also said that the proposals were envisaged with an eye on the Assembly elections.
