Traders seminar to discuss State's development plan

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (KVVES) will hold a seminar in Kozhikode on February 14 to prepare a roadmap for the State's development. It would be the third in a series of programme organised by the KVVSE.

T. Naziruddin, K. Hassan Koya and Mariyil Krishnan Nair, spokespersons of KVVES, said on Friday that successive Governments that ruled the State had placed a heavy debt on the people. Even by official statistics, in the past five decades when the State was ruled by different political parties, the debts had increased to Rs.50,000 crores. There had also been significant decline in agricultural and industrial production. Yet, there had not been any meaningful discussion on the need to recognise the significant contributions to society by local entrepreneurs who had invested in business ventures and the importance of the trade and commerce sector.

They said there was urgent need for measures to ensure adequate space for the nearly 35 lakh people living below poverty line and for development of women.

Besides addressing these development issues, the symposium on February 14 would also seek the views of experts on measures to help the State's 50 lakh unemployed youth. KVVES president T. Naziruddin said the merchant community was of the opinion that the Government should take measures to trim revenue expenditure and tone up administrative efficiency.

The symposium at Taj Residency would be the third in a series organised by KVVES.

The former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calicut K.K.N. Kurup, the former Agricultural Production Commissioner M.S. Joseph, social activist and former Naxalite leader K. Venu, and representatives of the Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad and teachers from the University of Calicut, among others, will speak at the symposium.
