THRISSUR: Electricity Minister Aryadan Muhammed has convened a meeting of the representatives of Thrissur Corporation and Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) on February 16 to discuss the long-pending power tariff issue of the corporation. This was disclosed by Mayor R. Bindu at the corporation council meeting held here on Friday. She said the corporation would seek legal opinion and would take appropriate position at the meeting convened by the Minister.
Tribunal order
The Mayor said that the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, New Delhi, ordered that the corporation pay the arrears and nine per cent interest to the KSEB. However, the tribunal had waived the penal interest of 24 per cent which was being claimed by the KSEB from the corporation. The corporation would now have to pay Rs.23.78 crores to the KSEB within eight weeks of the order, which was issued on January 25. This is the arrears amount for the period between December 2002 and December 2005. The Mayor said the preliminary analysis of the tribunal order indicated that the corporation would have to pay the arrears to the KSEB. However, the possibilities of paying that amount in instalments ws one option that could be explored. Leader of the Opposition in the council I.P. Paul said that the corporation was unlikely to get any excuse for not paying the arrears after the tribunal order.
