Lending voice to Bollywood

Staff Reporter

Sudesh Bhosle

Kozhikode: Noted Bollywood playback singer Sudesh Bhosle says he would love to see the day when a song in his own voice becomes a hit. "Basically, I am a mimicry artiste. Many of my hit numbers are in voices of great actors, especially Amitabh Bachchan. I have also lent my voice for Sanjeev Kumar and Anil Kapoor," said Bhosle, who was in the town to participate in a programme on the second day of the Malabar Mohotsavam on Friday.

"But I am an entertainer; I make people laugh, I sing for the old and younger generation alike. Every generation likes my show," said the singer, whose career spans 25 years in the Hindi film industry.

Sharing his experiences with Amitabh Bachchan, he said he was an ardent fan of the actor since childhood. "The movie Muqaddar Ka Sikandar inspired me to imitate him. My friends appreciated me for this and I began doing shows." His meeting with composer Laxmikant was the turning point in his career. He was then asked to sing in Amitabh's voice. The songs in Ajooba were a hit, Bhosle recollected.

The song Jumma chumma in Hum raised his popularity. But all over the world people thought it was Amitabh who sang the hit number. Even his wife, Jaya Bachchan had then commended her husband for the song.

Bhosle, who is in Kozhikode for the first time, said he had been invited for Malabar Mahotsavam two years ago. But he was unable to attend the festival as his flight suffered a technical snag in Jaipur. "This time also my flight got delayed. But I am lucky to be here, " he said.

Is he related to Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle? " Many people ask me that question. I am not. But I have great reverence for Ashaji. She has guided me all these years," he said.

In fact, it was Asha Bhosle who spotted the young Sudesh when he mimicked the late R.D. Burman and later she recorded the song he had sung and presented it to him. They have now teamed up to bring out an ablum - the Real R.D, he said.

Bhosle comes from a family of musical background. His mother, Sumantai Bhosle was an AIR artiste while his maternal grandmother, Durgabai Shirodkar, was a well-known classical singer.
