Kolam contest: Try how creative you are at Ideal Home Exhibiton

T.Saravanan

Try your deftness with `dotted kolam,' `coloured kolam' and `rangoli; competitions open to menfolk and students too Half-a-litre sachet of milk will be offered free to all customers who take food at `Dosa Festival' today

FOLLOW THE DOTS: Contestants try their hands at the `rangoli' contest, held at the Ideal Home Exhibition at Tamukkam Grounds in Madurai, on Friday.

MADURAI: The contest was organised to motivate and bring the best out of competitors. The creative faculty of the contestants was also tested. With precise technique, the participants deftly drew lines around the dots. And what emerged at last were beautiful `kolams' in different designs and hues.

The competition was conducted at the ongoing Ideal Home Exhibition at Tamukkam Grounds organised by the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association. It was conducted in three categories — `dotted kolam,' `coloured kolam' and `rangoli.'

"It was a conscious attempt to popularise traditional `line drawing.' Though most of the entries were from women, we have also invited college students and interested men to participate in the contest and win prizes. In fact, the message about the competition was spread through our contacts by word of mouth. What we look for in the competition is the precision of lines and dots besides colouring effect on kolams," said N. Sulaiman, Assistant Director, Regional Centre for Art and Culture.

Starting Friday, the contest will be conducted daily till February 13 between 8 and 10 a.m. "We are also taking efforts to attract more people, not only from Madurai but also from neighbouring districts. The competitors will be given a free hand to draw their own designs and encouraged to attempt innovative kolams. By far, the competitors are brilliant in Friday's contest giving vent to their latent talents," he said.

The winners of Friday's competition were Angeswari of Kannanendhal, R. Kasturi of Pasumalai and Suganthi of Cumbum. Consolation prizes were distributed to seven participants.

`Dosa Festival'

Maditssia will organise a `Dosa Festival' at the fair on February 11 and 12.

Half-a-litre sachet of milk will be offered free to all customers who take food in the `Dosa Festival' on Saturday. Those who take part in the festival on Sunday would get a cool drink free along with the food, according to a Maditssia release.
