Boycott of court near total

CHENNAI: The court boycott called by the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) was near total in the High Court and other subordinate courts in Chennai on Friday.

In the morning, a large number of advocates took out a campus rally and urged advocates not to participate in court proceedings. Those waiting in court halls for their cases to be called too, were asked to join the boycott. Later, a dharna was organised on the premises. Addressing the gathering, the MHAA president, S. Prabakaran, flayed the "indifferent" attitude of the judiciary towards complaints of police harassment.

The matter relates to the registration of a "foisted" case against a Madurai advocate by the then Inspector of Anna Nagar police station, K. Mariappan. — Special Correspondent

Stamp on President's Fleet Review

CHENNAI: The Department of Posts is releasing four commemorative postage stamps on "President's Fleet Review, Visakhapatnam" in the denomination of Rs.5 each on February 12.

According to a press release from the Principal Chief Postmaster General, Tamil Nadu Circle, Chennai, a naval fleet review is a long-standing tradition followed by navies all over the world. It is a grand event when every operational ship is spruced up, displaying its crest and its company in a spirit of loyalty and allegiance to the country.

Stamps, first day covers, and information brochures, will be available at all philatelic bureau/counters, the release added. — Special Correspondent

Red sanders seized

CHENNAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Chennai, has seized red sanders logs and parts of musical instruments, totally weighing about 15 tonnes. This was found on interception of an export container moving from Coimbatore inland container depot to Malaysia at Chennai harbour.

In the international market, the value of the consignment was over Rs. 2 crore, according to an official release issued on Friday.

The shipping documents filed indicated export of 100 per cent cotton-knitted T-shirts and panties to Malaysia by an exporter based at Tirupur. However, on verification, the exporter was found to be non-existent.

Export of red sanders is not allowed since it is a unique species, which grow only in parts of Cuddappah and Nellore districts of Andhra Pradesh. Musical instruments made out of this wood are popular in Japan, the release added. — Special Correspondent

Sivaji statue to be unveiled

CHENNAI: A life-size statue of Sivaji Ganesan will be unveiled by the Pondicherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy at Bharatipuram on the East Coast Road in the union territory on Saturday.

CM solemnises 10 marriages

CHENNAI: General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday solemnised the wedding of the wards of ten party men.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms.Jayalalithaa said she was following the path laid down by her mentor and party founder, the late M.G.Ramachandran.

Delay in dispatch of phone bills

TIRUNELVELI: There is likely to be a delay in the dispatch of telephone bills for February.

According to V. Raju, General Manager, Tirunelveli Telecom District, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, a new statewide computer billing system is being implemented for the billing of landline phone connections.

So, there is likely to be a delay of a week in the issue of bills, dated February 9, 2006, for customers in Tirunelveli urban and surrounding areas, Tenkasi urban areas and Paavoorchathram areas of Tirunelveli telecom district. So, the last date for payment of bills will be extended and indicated in the bills.

One killed, eight injured in road accident

TIRUNELVELI: One person was killed and eight others were injured when a vegetable laden lorry overturned near here on Thursday.

Police said the van, which was proceeding from Sankarankovil to Tirunelveli, overturned near Ilanthaikulam Junction under Thevarkulam police station limits, in which Chinnadurai (38) of Chundankurichi was killed as he was trapped under the lorry.

The injured were rushed to the Sankarankovil Government Hospital.

Keys of permanent shelters handed over

Nagercoil: The Government had spent Rs.1 crore as relief to tsunami-hit fishermen in Periavilai near Manavalakurichi, said Collector Sunil Paliwal.

Handing over 59 keys of permanent shelters to beneficiaries in the presence of Kottar Bishop Leon Dharmaraj, he said construction of a community hall was under way in the village, for which the Government had allotted Rs.25 lakh.

Auction of market cancelled

Nagercoil: The Nagercoil municipality has cancelled the public auction for Vadassery market.

The annual public auction to award contract for administering Vadassery Kanakamoolam market was conducted recently.

The highest bid was Rs.50 lakh compared to Rs.1.55 crore fetched last year.

The amount offered by the bidders was said to be the lowest in recent years.

So, the municipality had decided to cancel the auction.

Nagercoil Municipal Commissioner Sudarshan Chowdry said the issue would be discussed in the next council meeting and a date would be fixed for re-auction of the market.

Assumes office

Tuticorin: C. Rajendran has assumed office as Special Officer (Joint Registrar grade), Tuticorin District Central Cooperative Bank, vice Xavier Fernando, who was transferred.

Previously, he was Special Officer, Tirunelveli District Central Cooperative Bank.

Move to create political awareness

TIRUCHI : The Nambikkai Nanbargal Iyakkam has decided to create political awareness among the people, at a meeting held to mark its fourth anniversary celebrations.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, Iyakkam coordinator N. Ramakrishnan said the members of the Iyakkam would prevail upon the people to elect efficient politicians in the forthcoming Assembly elections and ensure cent per cent polling.

The Iyakkam has also decided to impart training to welfare organisations to distinguish between genuine and bogus voters. It will mobilise women's organisations, consumer fora, farmers' associations and workers' associations and field worthy candidates for the Assembly elections.

Relief material distributed

TIRUCHI : The chairperson of the State Social Welfare Board, C. R. Saraswathi, on Wednesday distributed relief material to the flood-affected people of Shanmuga Nagar in the city at a function organised by the Centre for Awareness and Rural Education (CARE).

Ms. Saraswathi commended the effective steps taken by the State Government to bring solace to the flood-hit people of various districts.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 112.53 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 845 cusecs and the outflow 1000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.

Drowns in tank

ERODE: The body of a man, who jumped into a tank in an inebriated condition, was recovered on Friday afternoon.

Police said Prabhu (21) of Uthukuli railway station area visited Kunnathure on Thursday evening to attend a funeral. After consuming liquor, he was not able to locate his moped and went to Gandhinagar and tried to start a moped belonging to some other person. On seeing this, the moped owner who was fishing in the Gandhinagar tank, raised an alarm. Frightened over this, it is alleged that Prabhu jumped into the tank and got drowned. The Kunnathur Police have registered a case and are investigating.
