KOLKATA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has reiterated its demand that New Delhi advise the United States to recall David Mulford, U.S. Ambassador to India. Prakash Karat, general secretary of the party, said here on Friday that "it appears that he [Mr. Mulford] does not understand how to behave as an Ambassador in this country. Any Ambassador has to behave in accordance with certain norms... we expect a response [on the demand] from the Government," he added. Mr. Karat was commenting on a letter, reportedly written by Mr. Mulford to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, where he has raised objections to certain remarks made recently by Mr. Bhattacharjee about U.S. President George Bush. "The Chief Minister has sent a strong letter of protest to the Prime Minister objecting to the manner in which Mr. Mulford has behaved," Mr. Karat said. "He [Mr. Mulford] has no business writing directly to the Chief Minister," he added. "Anyone is free to comment on the political affairs of a country but an Ambassador has to behave in accordance with certain norms", Mr. Karat said.
