Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: T.J. Pedley, a Fellow of Royal Society (F.R.S.), London, and professor at the University of Cambridge, was on a two-day visit to the city to deliver a lecture recently. His visit was at the invitation of the Department of Mathematics, Karnatak University's Kittur Rani Channamma P.G. Centre, and Bhootramanahatti. He delivered a lecture titled "Bio convention of Microbes". A pioneer in the field of biological fluid mechanics, he spoke about the mathematical modelling of the motion of microorganism in a fluid. Applied mathematicians, Mr. Pedley said, have come up with "Diffusion Equation" of the activity of microbes, which describes a random walk of microbes in a fluid. He elaborated a Fokker-Plank equation which combines the parameters of volume of microbes per unit, their diffusing ability, motion of fluid in which the microbes move and the drifting forces.
