THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In view of the alarming rise in accident deaths, the Government will set up trauma care units in Kasaragod, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Kollam and Neyyattinkara with a total outlay of Rs.7.50 crores, Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman said in his Budget speech on Friday. Mr. Purushothaman said the Government would also set up a state-of-the-art spine surgery unit at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College at an outlay of Rs.1.46 crores, install CT scanners at the Kottayam, Alappuzha and Thrissur medical colleges and construct waste treatment plans at the Kozhikode and Kottayam medical colleges with an outlay of Rs.70 lakhs. The facilities at the hostels in medical colleges and dental colleges would be improved at an outlay of Rs.10 crores, he added. An infertility clinic would be set up in Thiruvananthapruam Medical College. Under the Centrally sponsored Janani Suraksha Yojana scheme, financial assistance at the rate of Rs.700 would be given for the first and second deliveries to women belonging to the below the poverty line (BPL) category. The financial assistance of Rs.50 a month now being given to poor TB patients would be enhanced to Rs.200 a month. Ten primary health centres would be upgraded to community health centres and district cancer care programme and pain and palliative care units would be started in all the 14 districts.
