Chandy likely to attend office from Monday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who was convalescing from a hipbone injury, is likely to attend office from Monday.

Official sources said that doctors had advised him that he could go to his office from Monday provided that the leg was not made to bear too much weight.

The Chief Minister had sustained the injury during his recent visit to Davos in Switzerland to attend the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. He had undergone a surgery in Davos before returning here a week ago. — Special Correspondent

Four killed in road accident

Alappuzha: Four persons including three women were killed when a tanker lorry ran over them at

Karuvatta Junction near Haripad in Alappuzha district on Friday, the police said. The victims were returning after a temple festival feast at Karuvatta. — PTI

Vakkom not to contest next Assembly poll

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman announced on Friday that he would not contest the coming Assembly elections.

Replying to a question at the post-Budget press conference, the Finance Minister said that he, however, would continue in politics. In his Budget speech in the Assembly, he bid an emotional adieu. "Today let me reiterate with nostalgia, my emotional attachment with this imposing symbol of democracy and every member of this august House." — Special Correspondent

Minister orders suspension of doctor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has ordered the suspension of the Head of the Neurosurgery Department of Kottayam Medical College S. Pushkala over delay in giving treatment to a child who was brought to the hospital in a critical condition. The suspension followed a preliminary inquiry by the Additional Secretary (Health) Rajan Kobragade. The child Riaz died on Thursday. Medical College Superintendent P. Asokan has been removed from the post pending further inquiry. Vice-Principal of the college M.J. Cyriac has been given charge of the Superintendent temporarily. — Special Correspondent

Jewellers to observe hartal today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Gold and silver merchants in the State will down shutters and observe hartal tomorrow in protest against the provisions in the budget affecting them. This was announced in a statement here by the All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association. In his budget speech, Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman had said that the rate on gold jewellery had been reduced substantially last year. Unfortunately, the dealers had not reciprocated by showing sufficient growth in turnover, as a result of which revenue had decreased substantially. He said that he therefore proposed to amend Section 11 to deny input tax credit on purchase of bullion and Section 12 to deny special rebate for purchase on old gold jewellery as in the case of Schedule I items. — Special Correspondent

Sainik School admission

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The roll numbers of candidates who have qualified for the interview and medical test for admission to classes VI and IX of Sainik School, Kazhakoottam, have been published. The list has been prepared on the basis of the all-India entrance examination conducted on January 8. The interview and the medical test will be held in Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram in March/April. The call letters for the interviews will be sent to the candidates by registered post. Those who do not receive the letters before March 10 should contact the School Principal on phone 0471--2418245, 2418247. Poet K.B. Menon passes away

THRISSUR: Noted poet, playwright and cultural activist K.B. Menon, 79, died in a private hospital here on Friday. He has authored several poems and songs besides writing a play and the screenplay for the film `Kathirkanakkili.' — Staff Reporter

Awareness campaign on pollution

KOZHIKODE: A State-level awareness campaign to check pollution and protect the environment will be launched in Kozhikode on Saturday.

The programme, a joint endeavour of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), State Council for Science Technology and Environment and the Forest Department, will be inaugurated by Forest Minister A Sujanapal, who is also in charge of KSPCB, at Hotel Jaya auditorium. The campaign would cover people's representatives, merchants, hospital authorities, local governments, residents' associations and students, KSPCB officials said. — Staff Reporter
