MUMBAI: The Democratic Front Government has agreed to grant a Rs. 10-lakh interest-free loan each to legislators to purchase four-wheelers. The Cabinet in its recent meeting agreed with the proposal after a large number of MLAs demanded cars to travel in their constituencies. Although the Government release on Cabinet decisions did not speak about the move, the sources said the Cabinet approved Rs. 10 lakh loan to every legislator in each term, the interest component of which would be borne by the State Government. The move is likely to cost over Rs. 40 crore to the State exchequer keeping in mind that there are 289 members in the Assembly and 76 members in Council. The decision comes when the State is already reeling under a debt of over Rs. 1.15 lakh crore, and finding it difficult to sufficiently fund infrastructure projects.
