PROMOTING THEATRE: C.S. Nanjudaiah inaugurating `Ranga Sambhrama,'- an interaction on stage activities in Shimoga on Friday.

SHIMOGA: Principal of the DVS Arts and Science College C.S. Nanjundaiah has stressed the need to incorporate good drama in the curriculum so that children will develop interest in theatre.

Inaugurating the "Ranga Sambhrama", an interaction among playwrights, stage artistes and art critics, he said the lack of interest among students for theatre was because their seniors were not allowing them to develop interest in them.

Besides the curriculum had not been revised suitably to create the right attitude among students towards drama and other stage-related activities.

He said that only by incorporating dramas in the curriculum, there will be improvement in the cultural scenario in schools and colleges.

Prof. Nanjundaiah said drama, which enjoyed royal patronage in olden days, now solely depends on the encouragement of art lovers for its survival. Veteran film and stage artistes are forced to spend the last phase of their life in difficulties with no financial support. It was the responsibility of Government to help such artistes, he said.

Prof. Nanjundaiah appreciated the initiative in arranging the programme to ensure better interaction among playwrights, artists and critics. This will go a long way in creating interest for theatre in students.

Drama critic and journalist Gudihalli Nagaraj presided over the function. Assistant Director of Information Rame Gowda was the chief guest.

Poet Satyanarayan Anathi inaugurated the interaction on native stage culture. Drama director Krishna Nayari; theatre activist Sambashiva Dalawai; lecturer Gauri Shankar; drama director Ramesh Chandra Datta and convenor of the "Nam Team" R.S. Halaswamy participated in the discussion.

Nagaraj Hawaldar, president of the "Belaku", cultural organisation, welcomed the gathering.

The function condoled the death of theatre activist C.G. Krishnaswamy and film artiste Vajramuni. Three dramas were staged as part of the programme.
