Canal develops minor breach

Staff Reporter

Workers rush to carry out repairs

  • RDO sees hand of some miscreants behind it
  • Paddy damaged due to water flow

NALGONDA : The Vajirabad major canal, under the Nagarjunasagar left canal, developed a minor breach at Chillapuram in Nereducharla mandal of Nalgonda district on Thursday night.

"It is not even a breach. We call it threatening breach and we immediately rushed our staff to attend the problem," Nagarjunasagar Project Chief Engineer Y. Abdul Basheer said on Friday. "Normalcy is being restored," he said. However, Miryalaguda RDO A. Mutyam Reddy blamed some `miscreants' for the breach.

According to the officer, a group of persons raised the gate to draw 750 cusecs into the canal as against its designed capacity of 514 cusecs. "Water was flowing with a reduced capacity of 437 cusecs when the water level was suddenly increased in a midnight operation," he maintained. As the surface layer of the canal got damaged, the present level was further reduced to 336 cusecs.

He said that only seven `guntas' (an acre is equal to 40 `guntas') of paddy belonging to Taru, Ramulu, Gopya, Bhikshamaiah and Kondalu were damaged due to the flow of water.

An investigation is on to trace the persons responsible.
