BANNER OF REVOLT: Wholesale vegetable sellers of Gandhiji Market thronging Dindigul Municipality on Friday.
DINDIGUL: Merchants of Gandhiji wholesale vegetable market on Friday thronged Dindigul Municipality asking the municipality not to auction new shops. The municipality floated tender recently for construction of 221 shops at the wholesale vegetable market complex and decided to let them through open auction. Merchants flayed this decision. They closed their shops. Retail vegetable sellers were the worst affected. The market has 374 shops. Construction of new buildings in the market would leave 153 vendors jobless as the municipality planned to construct 221 shops only. Existing vendors think that their chances of getting new shops are remote. They are ready to manage with existing facilities. Moreover, they had obtained High Court order directing the municipality to allot shops to the existing vendors. Town Deputy Superintendent of Police S. Durai and Municipal Engineer A. Deenadayalan interacted with agitators and assured to arrange a meeting with municipal officials to sort out the issue amicably. Later, the agitation was withdrawn.
