`Revolutionary' hip joint surgery

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Uttaiah, 52, of Mysore successfully underwent the new Birmingham hip joint resurfacing surgery, described in medical circles as "revolutionary," at Vikram Hospital here.

Orthopaedic surgeon Prashant told presspersons that young and active patients with persistent hip pain, not responding to painkillers or physiotherapy with limitation of movements because of arthritis, benefit from this surgery.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Prashant, who did his fellowship in hip joint surgeries at Birmingham City Hospital, U.K., under the guidance of Ronan Tracey, inventor of the technique.

"This is far superior to the conventional hip joint replacement surgery as the patient can sit, squat on the floor or carry out any sporting activity after the surgery. In conventional replacement surgery, the patient is unable to sit cross-legged, use Indian toilets or sit on the floor. Moreover, this surgery is less painful and less invasive than the regular hip joint replacements," Dr. Prashant said.
