SHRAVANABELAGOLA: Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajashekaran has promised that he will make every effort to include Shravanabelagola in the list of World Heritage Sites recognised by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Mr. Rajashekaran, who visited to the pilgrim town on Friday to participate in the Mahamastakabhisheka celebration of Bahubali, told mediapersons that he learnt about the importance of Shravanabelagola, after visiting the place. It has all the credentials to become a World Heritage Site - it has the tallest monolithic statue of Bahubali, largest number of Digambara Jain temples and largest number of inscriptions in the country. The Union Minister said that Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, will visit Shravanabelagola on February 15 to participate in the anointing ceremony. Representatives of the State Government will appeal to him to prepare a detailed report on why Shravanabelagola should be included in the list of World Heritage Sites and send it to UNESCO for consideration.
Work on infrastructure
Expressing his satisfaction over spending Rs. 75 crores released by the Union Government judiciously for creating infrastructure in Shravanabelagola, he said that this will help in projecting it as a prominent tourist spot in the country.
