India leads in `insourcing' too

Special Correspondent

Singapore-based FTD Technology to recruit staff

Bangalore: If you are an M.Tech holder or equivalent with some industry exposure, the upcoming "insourcing" ventures can provide you with good career opportunities.

Chief Executive Officer of Singapore-based FTD Technology Private Ltd. P. Bala told The Hindu that many businesses, especially in the manufacturing sector, wanted scalability and design changes done fast. "If the product or its important components are being outsourced, say from another country and then assembled elsewhere, it become difficult to upgrade the total product... you lose the edge in a competitive market," he said.

"In this new approach, the client company gets its work done exclusively by a smaller firm almost like a captive supplier. The bigger company's intellectual property rights are scrupulously protected and a steady and dependable supply ensured. An example is that of a major Japanese company supplying computerised car navigation systems. The research, design and fabrication part is done by a smaller company as an exclusive deal," Mr. Bala said.

FTD's India president N. Ramakrishnan, based in Bangalore, said they are recruiting staff for several in-sourced ventures slated to come up here and elsewhere in India. "Knowledge is India's strength while China is strong in manufacturing. A major industrial manufacturer will wish to get the best of both, and a lot of design work can be done by Indian partners. We help in finding the right partner and then arrange the collaboration terms and agreements," he said.

Moving apart from computer hardware components, machine tools may be the next area of interest for in-sourcing, he said.
