Jayalalithaa inaugurates nine development projects

Throws open road over bridge near Tiruvallur railway station

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday dedicated nine projects, completed at a total cost of over Rs. 130 crore, to the people besides laying the foundation for various other projects, at a function in the Secretariat.

Among the projects dedicated were two road over bridges (ROBs) at Chromepet and Tiruvallur.

The expenditure was borne by the State Government and Railways.

One of the ROBs, between Chromepet and Tambaram Sanatorium on the outskirts of the city, was built at a cost of Rs. 26.50 crore.

The 1,683 metre long bridge has five ramps and an elevated rotary. Crash barriers with 0.5 m width, 86 deck slabs, service roads and footpath-cum storm water drains are its other features.

The bridge near the Tiruvallur railway station was constructed at a cost of Rs.14 crore.

Water projects

Another important project completed was the Rs. 85.04 crore comprehensive drinking water supply scheme (CDWSS). It would benefit over 2.48 lakh people in Dindigul municipality and Thadikombu, Vadamadurai, Agaram and Eriodu special panchayats. The quantity of water supplied within the municipal limit would go up from 57 litres per capita per day (LPCD) to 90 LPCD and in the special panchayats from 15 LPCD to 55 LPCD.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also laid the foundation for five CDWSS, covering 900 habitations, in five blocks — Thoppampatti, Vedasendur, Gujiliamparai, Oddanchathram and Vadamadurai. These would be implemented at a cost of Rs.32.55 crore.

She inaugurated the work on the Rs. 38.01 crore CDWSS covering Vedasendur, Palayam, Oddanchathram, Sriramapuram and Kannivadi special panhayats. The Chief Minister inaugurated various facilities including students' utility centre, industrial park and entrepreneurs' self-employment promotion centre and buildings for various departments constructed at a total cost of Rs. 5.08 crore on the Bharatidasan University campus. She also laid the foundation for construction of many other facilities on the campus.

In the Karaikudi Alagappa University complex, she dedicated buildings worth Rs. 98 lakh and laid the foundation for an auditorium and other facilities to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 3.39 crore.

Foundation was laid for various works at Periyar University in Salem at an estimated cost of Rs.18.39 crore.

Sports facilities

She dedicated infrastructure facilities such as imported polytan mega turf synthetic surface and swimming pools established at the sports complexes in Chennai, Tirunelveli, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Madurai at a cost of Rs.6.99 crore.

The Chief Minister handed over cheques to nine of the 145 student beneficiaries who are wards of handloom weavers, as assistance for higher studies. The beneficiaries were chosen on the basis of the marks scored by them in the school final examinations.

Annual assistance ranging from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000 was given to each student, depending on the subjects chosen by them.

The funds were released from the MGR Handloom Weavers' Welfare Trust, according to an official release. Ms. Jayalalithaa also handed over house site pattas to nine of the 1,500 allottees of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board sites and houses in the Pudur housing scheme at Kodambakkam. The houses and sites were allotted to these beneficiaries 20 years ago.
