Get licence, Internet cafes told

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The city police on Friday asked Internet cafe operators in the city to obtain licence from the police.

A section of Internet parlour owners said that the police came to their cafes a few days ago and advised them to apply for licence.

When contacted, a senior police officer said they received more than 40 applications seeking licence.

The action was in the wake of an e-mail message threatening to blow up Parliament. The Central Crime Branch police traced the message to Tirunelveli last year.

Internet cafe operators said some of the conditions stipulated for obtaining licence would be difficult to meet with.

About 387 Internet parlours had applied for licence in the city, which excluded the suburban areas. The number of Internet parlours was more than 1,000 in the Greater Chennai area, the authorities said.
