COIMBATORE: Students from four schools in Coimbatore drew public attention to air and water pollution on Friday in a programme launched by Siruthuli and the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central.

This was the first in a series of environment-related activities students would be involved in at the rate of 500 every year from 60 schools.

The inaugural programme involved 20 students checking air pollution at the busy D.B. Road-Tiruvenkatasamy Road junction. They also collected samples of water from the Noyyal river and the Valankulam Tank.

Awareness campaign

Siruthuli had involved students in various forms of campaign to generate awareness on environment protection.

Now on, they would collect samples from polluted water bodies and measure the level of air pollution. The president of the club N. Krishnakumar said the objective was to familiarise the young stakeholders of environment with the various factors that caused its degradation. After the programme's inauguration by Siruthuli's trustee R.V. Ramani, the students were taken to Kooduthurai - the origin of the river - where they collected water samples.

The aim was to compare the pollution level at this point with those in the samples collected closer to the city. Samples were collected from the river at Madhampatty-Thondamuthur Pirivu and also from Valankulam Tank that was part of the Noyyal system.

Laboratory tests

These students of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Avila Convent, Nehru Vidyalaya and Suburban Matriculation School took the samples for test to the laboratory in the Bhavan's school.

The Palani Hills Conservation Council would provide technical support to this programme. Its vice-president R. Kannan, said a similar programme was being implemented at Kodaikanal.
