MADURAI : Computer teachers working in government schools began an indefinite strike on Friday to protest the State Government's proposal to hand over the computer contract to private sector from the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT). Over 70 teachers from 36 government, Corporation and municipal schools in Madurai district staged a protest demonstration near the office of Chief Educational Officer here as part of the State-wide agitation demanding `permanent jobs' for the computer teachers who are now on contract. T. Ravichandran, district president of Higher Secondary Computer Teachers' Association, and secretary K. L. Ramesh Babu, who addressed the striking teachers, said that computer teachers were on the verge of losing their jobs if the Government went ahead with its proposal. The association members said that the decision, would affect 2,394 computer teachers who had been working for the past seven and a half years under contract system. Stating that they would boycott classes, the teachers said the agitation would continue till the Government met their demands. They also threatened to surrender their university certificates to the Government.
