Madurai Bench staff eager to bag top posts

MADURAI : After a gap of more than five years, the Madras High Court Staff Association is scheduled to elect its office-bearers on Saturday.

Since it is the first election after the inauguration of the Madurai Bench on July 24, 2004, the staff attached to the Bench are eager to bag top posts in the association. The employees here believe that their grievances could be better represented to the Registry only when a few of them occupied prime positions in the association.

While the association would be headed by president, secretary and treasurer, common to both the principal seat in Chennai and the Madurai Bench, two separate bodies consisting of a vice-president, a joint secretary and seven executive members, would function in each of the institutions.

The election will be held simultaneously in Chennai and Madurai with more than 1700 employees casting their vote. Results will be announced by evening the same day. Separate election officers have been appointed at the two locations and the Deputy Registrar (Administration) will be the officer in charge of the Bench.

In all, 17 candidates from the Bench are in the fray and the final list of contestants, released on Friday, included sub-assistant registrars to drivers. Every department has named a representative in the list. Even as S. Palanichamy, court officer and S. Selvakumar, sub-assistant registrar, would contest for the post of president; another court officer, T.J. Lakshmipathi, and section officer, W. Solomon, would compete to occupy the office of secretary.

The subordinate staff have opted to contest for a place in the executive committee. Nine employees, including N. Dharmalingam, assistant, E. Esakki Kumaraguru, office assistant, and K. Muthukumar, Personal Assistant to judges, will compete to become members of executive committee.

Already, Rs.50 is being deducted from their salaries towards the Chief Justice's Relief Fund and Rs.5 towards the association fund. The funds are utilised to provide financial aid to the staff after retirement or during exigencies.

Apart from this, many more welfare measures for the staff and solutions to the problems faced by the employees in the Bench will be brought to the forefront after the elections, says one of the contestants.
