Protest disrupts traffic
Special Correspondent
Bangalore:
Members of the Anjuman-e-Imamia, representing the Shias, staged a protest near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Friday, deploring what they termed objectionable comments about them and the observance of Muharram, in an editorial published in an English daily (not The Hindu).
Traffic was disrupted at the intersection for some time. The protestors later dispersed, the police said.
In a memorandum submitted to the resident editor of the newspaper concerned, the Anjuman leaders said their sentiments were hurt by the publication of the article. "Your insensitivity has trampled on the sentiments of Shias, causing them pain and hurt. Even the U.S. forces in Iraq while on duty in Karbala, move with reversed arms while you have chosen to aim yours at the heart of the Shias,'' the memorandum said.
