Thiruvananthapuram: A hi-tech spine surgery unit for Medical College Hospital (MCH) and the allocation of Rs.10 crores for the activities of Vizhinjam International Sea Port Ltd., are the among the highlights of the Friday's budget announcement as far as the State capital is concerned. The spine surgery unit will be set up at a cost of Rs.1.46 crores. The MCH, one of the oldest medical institutions in the country, will be developed as a premier institution for healthcare and research on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The burns unit and the rehabilitation medicine and geriatric units in the hospital will also be modernised, Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman said. The first of the infertility clinics being planned in all medical colleges will be set up at the Thiruvananthapuram MCH. A sum of Rs.5 lakhs has been earmarked for this in the budget, he announced. The Vizhinjam International Sea Port Ltd. has been set up for the implementation of the Vizhinjam Deep Water International Trans-shipment Container Terminal project.
