Belgaum: The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) will confer honorary doctorates on U.R. Chief Mentor and Chairman of Infosys Technologies Limited N.R. Narayana Murthy will deliver the convocation address. Governor and Chancellor T.N. Chaturvedi will preside over the convocation. Degrees and distinctions will be conferred on students who completed M.Tech., MBA, MCA, BE, B.Tech and B.Arch at the university in June-July 2005.

    Transport

The VTU has arranged transport facility from Channamma Circle here to the venue of the convocation from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. A vehicle will leave the circle every 15 minutes.

Vice-Chancellor K. Balaveera Reddy said here on Saturday that 81 VTU gold and endowment gold medals will be presented to meritorious students — 38 from B.E. programmes, 40 from M.Tech and one each from MBA, MCA and B.Arch courses.

Bangalore-based BMS College of Engineering, with 11 medals, tops the list of gold medal winners from BE programmes. Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan, has won nine gold medals and Belgaum-based K.L.E. College of Engineering one gold medal. In respect of M. Khuito Sema of Nagaland, who was a student at Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan, and secured the first rank in BE Civil Engineering, has won four gold medals and a cash prize. G.S. Sandeep, from the same college, and Priti Kedia of BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore, have bagged three gold medals each for securing the first ranks in B.E. Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering, respectively.

He said 30,757 students appeared for examinations in June-July 2005, and the pass percentage is 89.13. Women students have performed better: 7,995 of them appeared for the examinations and 7,544 have passed (94.35 per cent).

    Question-paper press

Disturbed by question paper leaks twice during the academic year 2005-06, the VTU has decided to set up a state-of-the-art printing press on the Jnana Sangam campus in three months.

The question papers for examinations in all branches during the next semester will be printed at Jnana Sangam, Dr. Reddy said.

He said the VTU is not prepared to take chances and allow unscrupulous elements to vitiate the examination system and put the future of students in danger.

After the VTU starts conducting all examinations online, the printing press will be used to bring out other material for the university.

The VTU prints nearly 11 lakh question papers each semester at a cost of nearly Rs. 30 lakhs.
