11-year-old Karur girl wins `Champion of Champions' title at yoga festival

PERFECT 10!: S. Bhanu Priya, who won the `Champion of Champions' title, performing an asana.

KARUR: A unique bid to beat asthma has brought laurels and the "Champion of Champions" title to an eleven-year-old schoolgirl from Karur who won plaudits at the 13th International Yoga Festival held at Pondicherry recently.

S. Bhanu Priya, studying Sixth Standard at the Kongu Vellalar Matriculation Higher Secondary School and practicing yoga under the expert trainer, Dr. M. Madhavan's Vivekananda Institute of Yoga Therapy here, came out with flying colours performing wonderfully well on stage and delineating the intricacies of yoga theory in the viva voce to bag the title, beating older competitors.

In the practical events, Bhanu Priya performed 10 asanas in front bending, back bending, twisting, hand balance and leg balance categories. After a commanding performance in the practicals, she bagged the maximum marks in the viva voce to bag the title, in the very first competition she took part.

Seven contestants

Seven champions competed for the star title and Bhanu Priya, the youngest of them all, beat them to it.

"Previously I was suffering from wheezing following bouts of asthma. To overcome that I took to yoga. Now I'm happy that the therapy has not only cured me of my ailment, but has also helped to corner glory," says a modest Bhanu Priya.

"We are conducting yoga classes and suggest therapy for special children such as the aurally and the visually challenged of the Anbalayam Home here. Bhanu Priya's achievement would do well to prove that yoga could deliver one of illness but also gives him or her self confidence, which is more vital'', says Dr. Madhavan.
