NEW DELHI: The Central Government is considering the recommendations made by a committee set up to suggest norms for simplification of service tax, rules and regulations and for expediting rebate. This was stated by Gautam Bhattacharya, Commissioner-Service Tax, Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), while inaugurating an interactive session on `Export and Import of Services: problems faced by service sector', organised here on Saturday by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham). The recommendations of the committee, headed by V. K. Garg, Commissioner, Central Excise, Ludhiana, were now being examined by the government so that the issues of imposition of service tax on various services exported and imported were further simplified and relaxed to enable the exporting community receive favourable treatment and the service tax contribution to the government kitty went up, Mr. Bhattacharya said. Mr. Garg, who was also present on the occasion, said there were 81 services now under the purview of service tax and a good number of them involved confusion in terms of service tax procedures and rules. "I have recommended that the genuine grievances of exporters on account of service tax should be addressed", said Mr. Garg.
