NO DAMAGE DONE: Panels on the wing left open for the engine to cool set the rumour mill in motion. Photo: K.R. Deepak
VISAKHAPATNAM: Damage to the President's aircraft? The press corps that covered President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's arrival at the Naval Air Station INS Dega believed for a while that a wing of the Boeing aircraft of IAF that brought Dr. Kalam to the city was damaged. The view of the aircraft from the terrace of the ATC building of INS Dega on which the media persons were having tea gave them the impression that the panels on the right wing of the aircraft were damaged. This sparked off a discussion among the mediapersons about how this could happen, as utmost care is taken before the first citizen of the country who is also Supreme Commander of Armed Forces takes off. There was also relief that the President landed safely. When the `damage' was brought to the notice of the Navy spokesman, he immediately checked with the officers concerned and told the reporters that the panels were open, as the aircraft would remain here overnight. But doubts remained in the minds of reporters and only after they returned to their respective offices and saw the enlarged photos of the `damage' on the computer screens were they convinced that it was not damage, as they feared but just the wing panels lifted.
