Move to ease wheat prices
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Government on Saturday released 1.5 lakh tonnes of wheat under the open-market scheme for February. This follows the release of an equal quantity earlier in the month to check spiralling wholesale prices. Wheat prices are expected to further ease with this additional release, an official release said.
The released quantum includes 20,000 tonnes for Delhi and Punjab; 15,000 tonnes for Haryana; 10,000 tonnes each for Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka and Maharashtra; 5,000 tonnes each for Uttar Pradesh and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Timely intervention by the FCI helped curb the increasing trend in wholesale prices of wheat in most centres, including Delhi, the release said, adding that the process would be eased further.
