New Delhi: ``Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get, it's what you are expected to give which is everything.'' The anonymous quote seems true when one sees the young and the not-so-young thronging gift outlets in the capital to buy presents for their beloved. To cash in on the occasion, gift and greeting cards shops are gearing themselves to play the perfect host this Valentine's Day (February 14). Having introduced a new range of Valentine cards, popular shops like Archies and Hallmarks are attracting buyers of varying age groups. ``This year, we have extra-large cards with special fabrication, which will lure people. We have also introduced a new range of noisy Valentine cards,'' says Youhan Aria, head of Corporate Communications, Archies. The outlets are trying out various methods to attract the most customers. From the favourites of last year musical cards to the latest fad, cards with flashy lights, everything appeals to the young brigade. Shop owners are busy helping customers choose the best and most exclusive card. Buyers come in all age groups: from college lecturers to schoolchildren. For the affluent ones, it's time to gift jewellery to their beloved. Brands like Stupid Cupid and other elegant designer jewellery are selling like hot cakes. ``This piece of jewellery is lovely. I plan to buy it for my girlfriend this Valentine,'' says Sandeep, a customer. Gifts made of crystal are also a hot favourite. With girls wanting to look their best on the D-day, sale of earrings and copper jewellery have also picked up, shop owners say. It's not just lovers who shower gifts this Valentine.
Celebration of love
Many believe Valentine's Day celebrates love, regardless of whether the other person is a parent, child, spouse, sister, brother or best friend. ``For me, Valentine's Day is not restricted to a lover. You buy gifts for anybody you love,'' adds Nita Chopra, another customer. The Valentine fever is raging among elders too. ``Today, the event has transcended the boyfriend-girlfriend category. We are also targeting people in their late 40s,'' says Mr. Aria. With the surge in popularity of occasions like Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day and Raksha Bandhan, gift and card outlets are upbeat about the boom in business. Gifts are available from Rs. 10 to Rs. 9,999, and so people from all social strata can afford them. There has been a 15 to 16 per cent growth in business on the occasion of Valentine's Day. ANI
