This Day That Age
Master Tara Singh, President of the Shiromani Akali Dal, said in Amritsar on February 11 that the formation of a Punjabi-speaking State as demanded by the Akali Dal seemed to be the only solution to the Punjab problem. "It solves both the questions of communal domination and the language." Delivering his presidential address at the tenth All-India Akali Conference in Amritsar, he said some modified forms of the Dal's proposal were suggested by "some well-meaning gentlemen. But to me all these solutions appear to be temporary and not conducive to permanent peace and settlement. The relations between the Hindus and the Sikhs were so close and deep that the present tension could not last very long. As soon as the Sikhs feel that they and their religion are safe, they are bound to win the goodwill and confidence of their Hindu brethren by serving them.''
