This Day That Age
Tributes were paid to the services rendered by Dr. A.J. Boyd, Principal, Madras Christian College, to the cause of education in South India and, in particular, to the cause of university education at a meeting held on February 10 at the Senate Hall, Madras. The meeting was organised by the Association of University Teachers, Madras, to bid him farewell on the eve of his retirement. Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, Vice-Chancellor of the Madras University, who presided, said he considered it a unique privilege to preside over the day's function, because he had known Dr. Boyd in very many spheres in which he had played a notable part. He referred to the long line of illustrious Principals of the Madras Christian College, from the days of Dr. Miller, and added that Dr. Boyd had kept up the tradition of the institution in a magnificent manner. Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar recalled his long association with Dr. Boyd. Mr. Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed desired that Dr. Boyd should remain in India after his retirement and work for the cause of higher education for women. Rev. Fr. L.D. Murphy said that as "the maker of modern Christian College at Tambaram," Dr. Boyd had ably maintained the traditions of his predecessors. Dr. Boyd, in the course of his reply, thanked the Association and the various speakers for the honour done to him and for the generous words. Though he was going back to his home country, he was feeling that he was leaving a home he had built for himself here and very many friends in this country.
