Suicide Prevention Centre to extend service to other cities

Chennai:
Sneha Suicide Prevention Centre founder Lakshmi Vijayakumar was awarded the Bharathi award by the Dawn Trust on Saturday. In its 20th year, the centre intends to extend its services to cities other than Chennai. "We hope to expand our network, perhaps, to Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy," she said.
"One lakh people commit suicide every year in India and 35 per cent of the are aged below 30. In the last six years volunteers have been counselling young people especially before examinations and when results were published, she said.
R. Gokulakrishnan, former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, presented the award at the Bharathi Memorial Hall.
